Committee on Special Education (CSE) and
Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)

The Committee on Special Education (CSE) is a multi disciplinary team, appointed by the Board of Education, that coordinates evaluations and makes recommendation for services and/or programs for children identified as having a disability. This group works to ensure that the child’s needs are considered from all viewpoints. The committee, as stated in the law, is comprised of the Assistant Superintendent for Research, Assessment, and Special Services, the Coordinator of Elementary Special Education and/or the Coordinator of Secondary Special Education, a psychologist, a special education teacher, the child’s classroom teacher, and a parent representative. The parent member is a supporter and ally of the child.

The Committee on Preschool Special Education is similar to the CSE, except the membership includes a representative from Suffolk County and does not include a psychologist. This committee determines the services for preschool youngsters, ages 3-5, who may have a disability. Here, too, the parent member is there to support the child.
